marie + ryan

engagement session in Bloomington, Indiana

I was having trouble coming up with a beautiful and meaningful location for these two, until I realize we could photograph them near the church, which is of course, the perfect place for them.

These two trek from Indiana to Arkansas every few weeks to see each other, so it only seemed right to include a small nod to their travels.

ryan + christine

Ryan was introduced to Christine at the Cincinnati Opera where she works.  She is so warm and sparklingly elegant that she looks like a natural part of this beautiful space.

Ault Park Cincinnati

They took their kite from the trunk at Cincinnati's Ault park.  The sky was dramatically windy and just on the cusp of a rain storm...

We quickly learned that a kite makes a fabulous makeshift umbrella.

Siena, Italy

I reread Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities while in Italy. Words that had previously seemed mythical to me made perfect sense in the author's hometown. Perhaps reality is still mythic in this view from the sky

St Catherine of Siena's church at twilight

The vaulted ceiling on the cathedral is covered with a deep blue starry sky. In my humble opinion, Siena's cathedral schools Florence in its contemplation of the heavens.

holly + cody

I love to shoot an engagement session in a couple's home environment. It's pretty cool to have some good documentation of this season in life.

I flew out to Pittsburgh for the session, and we walked around the neighborhood, down the bustle of Carson Street, and climbed up on Holly's roof. The only difficulty in this session was to actually stop photographing; I wanted the day to last indefinitely.
What a pure and tender love.

also, not to brag, but look what I'm working with here...

The last two images were made in Holly's kitchen after the session was officially over. Sometimes the last piece of film is my favorite one.
